What is First In Families?
- FIF provides flexible, efficient, family supports which help stretch public dollars, and build community capacity and self-sufficiency.
- FIF was started by and is still managed by people with disabilities and their families.
What has FIF achieved?
Direct support to people with disabilities and their families:
- On average, public dollars are stretched to 2:1. For example, a family with a child with autism needed a fence for the backyard. First In Families contributed $200 for wood and got a matching contribution from Home Depot. Home Depot also secured a contractor to donate services to install the fence.
- There are currently First In Families chapters serving 32 of North Carolina's 100 counties.
- Over 10,000 families have gotten what they need to live successfully in the community rather than in institutional settings.
- Public education to show businesses and community groups that:
- People with disabilities are able to work and want to contribute to society;
- Public dollars can be more effective when combined with existing community resources.
- People with disabilities and their families know best what they need and can be leaders in their communities.
